  Some volleyball thoughts
I grew up 9 blocks from the beach in Santa Monica, California. I learned a beginning form of volleyball in 5th grade (1959) from Al Scates who was the  PE coach at Roosevelt Elementary School in Santa Monica, CA. Al  later became the UCLA men's volleyball coach which he is until today. I did not play team volleyball in high school (1966-1970) even though we did have a boys team that was made up mostly of basketball players. I played the summer of 1970 and tried out for the SMC coed volleyball team and made the team. We played the season and I got hooked (team practice daily, play after classes, play evenings at Rec centers, play weekend afternoons at UCLA in Pauley Pavilion). I never seriously played outdoors in the sand back then - the game was just too different and slow. In those days I could find an open gym with competition on any evening and play doubles for free. I have played in church leagues, rec leagues, indoor leagues and sand leagues. I'm slowing down on the court and not jumping so high anymore. I look more to being a setter and moving into the coaching side of volleyball.
  Why I play
I have always met the nicest people on the volleyball court. The mean, selfish players do not last long on a volleyball team. They quit or we played 'around' them. No matter the score, the game memories are always of fun times with friends. That is why I want to pass my love of the game on to new players.
